I’ve been helping resolve legal claims for more than twenty years. For the last six years I have been doing this as a commercial mediator in a wide range of civil disputes. I enjoy mediating commercial claims and helping clients – parties and their lawyers – resolve disputes.
Here’s how I typically serve my clients:
Selecting cases and preparing for mediation
I help lawyers identify which claims will be suitable for mediation by offering free telephone assessments. I provide information and plain English guidance on the process for their clients to help them make an informed decision. I make admin and preparation as simple as possible to avoid unnecessary work for lawyers and expense for clients. I do this by providing preparation notes and pro forma documents and by using on-line technology for booking dates.
Settling difficult claims
I help clients settle difficult claims where negotiations have so far failed. I do this at mediation settlement meetings or by telephone mediation. I create an environment where parties feel comfortable communicating and their representatives confident negotiating. My trusted neutral role enables me to remove obstacles to progress and helps the parties gain a clearer understanding of the strengths, weakness and opportunities of the claim. I help them generate and evaluate settlement possibilities and work towards finding a solution that meets each party’s needs. In short – safe assisted negotiation.
CPD Training for Lawyers
Not all lawyers were trained in mediation and negotiation techniques. I deliver practical, be-spoke, in-house CPD courses for solicitors and barristers to prepare them for representing clients effectively at mediation.
More About Me
I graduated in law at Leicester University in 1988 and did my Solicitors’ Final Examination at the College of Law, Chester in 1989. I practised mainly as a personal injury solicitor with Thompsons and Russell Jones & Walker in Liverpool and Manchester before moving nearer to the Lake District in 2003 and becoming a full time mediator in 2008.
